MD Comptroller Releases New Report on Federal Workforce

The Maryland Comptroller's Office and the University of Maryland Robert H. Smith School of Business recently released a new report that explores how federal workforce trends and budget shifts may impact local economies, public sector employment, and private industry.

Key Findings:

  • 1 in 5 Maryland jobs is federally supported.
  • Maryland receives over $140 billion in federal spending annually.
  • Federal jobs pay significantly more than other sectors, bolstering regional income.
  • Some counties are 4–5 times more reliant on federal contracts than the national average.
  • Disruptions like shutdowns or relocations could have major local ripple effects.

There are also Phase 2 tools coming this fall that will help local leaders simulate shutdowns, agency cuts, and other scenarios.
