MML’s annual “If I Were Mayor, I Would…" essay contest is the League's oldest ambassador program and is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The 25-year-old contest educates fourth graders (and teachers) about municipal government and the role of the mayor. A postcard announcing the 2025 essay contest was mailed to schools and municipalities in early January. Materials are now live on our website.
Essay contest deadline is March 7
Now is the time to help build awareness around our long-standing program. Here's how:
- Encourage your local 4th grade teachers to visit the Essay page
- Essays are stronger when students hear from the municipal officials who run their cities and towns. Though students love to hear from the mayor, any municipal official can make a school visit. Ready, set, visit!
Key Dates to Remember
- March 7 – all digital essay submissions due
- March 13 – annual essay reading day
- April 25 – Essay Ceremony honoring district winners
