MML and the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) crafted joint statements to the Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee ahead of their hearings this week on draft police reform legislation. MML’s legislative committee was unable to review all 15 draft bills in time for the submission deadline and therefore the League took no formal position on any of the proposed legislation.
However, in conjunction with MACo, the organizations submitted two statements to the Senate committee on issues that have direct impact to local governments and in which MML has been involved in the past; 1) police worn body cameras and how they interact with the Public Information Act (Link), and 2) government liability for actions of their employees (Link).
While these are just two of many issues that will be debated surrounding potential police reform they are nonetheless impactful for local governments. MML will continue to engage in this discussion as the proposals move forward.
