MML, along with the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) and Maryland Nonprofits, wrote a joint letter to the Governor advocating for deferred repayments to the State Unemployment Insurance Fund. Many municipalities choose to reimburse the Fund when a former employee is awarded unemployment payment after filing a claim, rather than paying taxes into the fund on a scheduled basis as many for-profit entities do. However, with the potential for layoffs occurring during this time of pandemic, when revenues are forecasted to drop, immediate reimbursements to the Fund would put even further fiscal strain on municipal budgets. In the letter the three organizations advocate for deferred reimbursements as a way to lessen the impact.
