On Wednesday, February 26, MML staff joined Senator Elfreth on a panel with municipal leaders and Sustainable Maryland program experts to support a bill to provide funding for educating communities in the development of strategies to achieve green community certification.
During the hearing, Senator Elfreth and Program Manager Mike Hunninghake shared that Sustainable Maryland’s long-term funding source, Town Creek Foundation, was no longer funding the program. Since municipalities are a partner in achieving state sustainability goals, the Senator reasoned, Sustainable Maryland is seeking to have their losses supplemented by state dollars in order to continue their mission and expand services.
The panel was rounded out by:
Jacqueline Goodall, Executive Director, Maryland Black Mayors
Duane Rosenberg, Mayor, New Carrollton
Ron Bjorkland, Greenbelt Green Team
Justin Fiore, Government Relations Manager, MML
The crossfile to this legislation is being heard in the House Appropriations Committee on Thursday, March 5. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Justin Fiore at justinf@mdmunicipal.com.
