[ARCHIVED] 23 and counting - Essay Contest Time

The 23rd round of the If I were Mayor, I would…essay contest is officially underway. Be on the lookout for essay materials outlining this year’s theme and questions, which were mailed to all municipalities on January 13. The materials are for your information. Your local schools will receive their own copies. Help us keep one of MML’s longest running ambassador programs thriving.

Here’s how:

  • Prominently display the contest poster in your city/town hall
  • At end of January, reach out to any schools in your area (or around) and inquire if they’ve received their essay materials. This friendly, personal reminder goes a long way.
  • Sometime during February or March, have an official (elected or staff) conduct a school visit to educate the fourth graders on how municipal government works and the role of the Mayor. Educating about municipal government is more important than focusing on the essay questions. Your knowledge is the one thing they can’t get anywhere else.
  • Consider volunteering to read the essays along with the Engagement and Outreach committee members on April 5th. It’s virtual and goes from 9 a.m. until we’re done the nearly 3,000 entries
  • Plan to attend the ceremony, in May, if a student from a school in (or near) your municipality wins
  • Plan to honor any winners or semi-finalist from in or around your municipality
