The required procedure to annex land into a municipality does not just end when the resolution is passed; in fact, there are several important notices that must be sent.
The Maryland Department of Planning (MDP) is offering assistance to municipalities that choose to embark on an annexation process. The exact steps to annex land are established in State law and must be followed to execute an annexation properly. MML’s Annexation handbook can be found here.
Part of the process actually occurs after the resolution is passed by the municipal governing body. This involves notifing several governmental entities including the county Clerk of Court, the Census Bureau, and the Maryland Department of Legislative Services (DLS). Each of these entities has important record keeping responsibilities and rely on accurate data regarding municipal boundaries. For additional questions please contact Bill Jorch: billj@mdmunicipal.org
