Currently, municipalities are authorized to place speed cameras in school zones after a detailed public process. As currently defined, school zones can only be designated around K-12 facilities that house school-related activities. HB 264 would expand the definition of school zone to include nursery schools, thereby allowing municipalities to designate a school zone around a nursery school and potentially implement speed cameras in that school zone.
Speed cameras are authorized in school zones as a way to deter speeding in areas where there is a high concentration of children. MML supports this bill which is an incremental expansion and continues with the same intent.
