This year, Marylander’s Fourth Graders are asked to focus on Celebrating the Soul of Maryland. Specifically, looking at their city/town or community and identifying what makes it special. The Engagement and Outreach Committee looks forward to seeing what these nine-year-olds believe makes their community unique and hearing how they would use those special traits to draw in visitors.
Last year’s new digital format was successful. So, once again, all entries will be accepted only via digital essay form. Complete information on the essay questions and submission guidelines is available at: www.mdmunicipal.org/2022essay and the digital form can be found HERE.
It’s time to play your part in amplifying one of the League’s oldest and most popular ambassador programs. Here are several easy ways to participate:
- Hang the If I Were Mayor Essay poster prominently in City/Town Hall. Essay materials went out to all municipalities in December.
- Use the essay theme to think about how your municipality can capitalize on what makes it special/unique and build a promotional campaign around it (P.S. Share what you’re doing with your local fourth grade class to inspire their essays)
- Conduct school visits (at any level) to highlight what municipal governments bring to Maryland’s quality of life. If going to a 4th grade class, talk about the essay and direct them to mdmunicipal.org/2022Essay
