ESGR is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers. All employers support and value the employment of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States and Territories, thereby increasing the readiness of the Reserve Components.
ESGR carries out its mission through its headquarters staff and nearly 3,500 volunteers across 54 State Committees who:
-Conduct proactive outreach to Service members and employers to make them aware of their rights and responsibilities under the Uniformed Service Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA);
-Provide no-cost, neutral mediation to Service members and their employers when issues arise; and
-Manage a robust Employer Awards program, including the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award (ESFA), to recognize the critical role supportive employers have in enhancing retention rates in the Reserve Component (RC).
