DHCD Seeks Updated Code Information

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's (DHCD) Codes Administration Division is requesting specific information from local officials in order to comply with Section 2 of the Omnibus Coastal Property Insurance Reform Act of 2008, Chapter 540 (House Bill 1353). The bill requires a review of current statewide building codes and asks that DHCD develop enhanced building codes for coastal regions of the State that promote disaster-resistant construction in those areas. DHCD needs to report their findings and recommendations to the Senate Finance Committee and House Economic Matters Committee on or before October 1, 2010.

To assist DHCD with the preparation of the report, they are requesting that local governments provide them with the following information:

  • The current codes in force in your jurisdiction.
  • Amendments/ordinances.
  • The proposed adoption date of any new codes expected within the next two years.
Note: The Department of Housing and Community Development, Maryland Codes Administration is in the process of adopting the 2009 I-Codes, which were published in late March of 2009. It is anticipated that the 2009 I-Codes will be adopted by the State in January 2010.
  • A brief summary of anything that you feel would address coastal region code enhancements that are already in place in your jurisdiction and should be considered in our report.

A response by July 17, 2009 would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about this request, please call or send an e-mail to: Ed Landon, Director, MD Codes Administration, Department of Housing and Community Development, 410/514-7444, landon@mdhousing.org.
